December 2008
It’s that time of year again when you should be contemplating how and where you will breed your mares for the upcoming year. Here at Buena Suerte Equine we have a full house of outstanding quarter horses from the premier bloodlines in the nation. All are young sires and their future is bright in coming years.
Genuine Strawfly a proven sire, a grade one stakes winner and a prolific race horse. He has sired ten stakes horses with average earnings per starter of $21,000. A leading third year crop sire in the nation.
Southern Corona is a full brother to Southern Cartel. He has proven he will be equal to Southern Cartel; his first foal crop had two stakes qualifiers in 2008 from a limited number of starters.
Metallic Lion is a complete outcross on most mares. He has had two seasons here with a good book of quality mares. Both years he has had grade one stakes qualifiers and nine winners from twelve starters. Beastly King by Metallic Lion leads the field with his qualification to the Los Alamitos $2 million Futurity to be run 12/19/2008.
Deefirst, a son of First Down Dash is out of a Chicks Beduino mare and has a most fashionable pedigree and is a very athletic individual. Deefirst has had six winners from a very limited crop of 2008; Deefirst had a qualifier for the All American Juvenile. Deefirst had his first stakes winner on October 15, 2008 when Call Her Dee the two-year-old filly won the Bell Hedge Memorial Stakes at Blue Ribbon Downs. Deefirst is off to a good start from a limited foal crop.
All these stallions’ futures are ahead of them and each of them have had a respectable book for the last two years. You can see their profiles and updates on Stallion E Search.
As in the past, we are a full service facility offering embryo transfer, cooled semen, sales prep and foaling. All our stallions have excellent quality semen and ship well. Please, continue to view our website in order to see our stallions, facilities and our employees who have been with me for a number of years.
Raul Solorio, DBM is in charge of our breeding operations and has been with Buena Suerte for six years and has been a dedicated employee who serves as the resident veterinarian along with me. Isrea Estrada is Buena Suerte’s farm manager and does about anything you asked of him.
Then there is Gwen who has been our office manager for 12 years. She is the one you will talk to on the phone and is responsible to get you a contract and all the information we need to breed your mare, along with any questions you have with the billings.
Needless to say, I have a great crew that is very dedicated to their job and also extremely dependable. If I brag too much on them they will want a pay raise, so that is all I am going to say. As for me, I just observe and supervise. Occasionally they tell me what to do, but “we gitter done!”
We are looking forward to another great breeding season. We have our dry mares under lights as of November 15th. We have vaccinated all of our stallions for EVA. All stallion owners who are breeding on commercial basis should do sixty days prior to the breeding season. In regards to EVA I do not plan to vaccinate the incoming mares of 2009 as most of them have been vaccinated for EVA the past 2-3 years and if we all keep the stallions vaccinated annually we can control this disease. That is the protocol used in Kentucky.
You should worm all your dry and pregnant mares at this time of the year especially after a good frost. The pregnant mares should be immunized with PneumoBort at 5, 7, & 9 months. All other routine immunizations such as West Nile and Sleeping Sickness should have already been done. We advocate the pregnant mare to be inoculated with the Rota Virus as prescribed to avoid possible foal diarrhea. We plan to continue giving the plasma to the newborns again this year. It has been a real life saver for these foals. We do everything possible to ensure a healthy foal so that they do not succumb to one of the dreadful foal diseases. We are aware of the cost in raising these foals and we work diligently to keep those costs to a minimum.
So as we move forward into 2009 we wish all of you have some great healthy foals which we all anxiously await. Again, this year we will be foaling out all our mares at Hunter Creek Farms with Susan Hunter. She does a great job for us and will for you also. We are so fortunate to have Susan and her foaling facility; we are just minutes away in case she may ever need our help. She is an extremely dedicated woman who does a great job. You can visit her website to view her facility and view the foals as they are born.
Keep our stallions in mind for the 2009 breeding season, they are all reasonably priced and the New Mexico program and purses get better each year. We are not a farm with a large number of stallions but emphasize on the quality of our stallions with the genetic make-up to produce superior race horses-Come by and see us anytime.
